Carol Miller Lieber, a leader at Engaging Schools for four decades, passed away in her home in late October. Facilitating academic success, healthy development, and postsecondary aspirations for every student were at the heart of her work.

Carol got the call to teach when she was just a teenager and it was her driving passion throughout her life. She became a middle and high school teacher, school founder, principal, curriculum writer, and clinical professor in teacher education. She had an independent spirit, and was fiercely collaborative, creative, and always curious — qualities she brought to her role as a senior consultant for Engaging Schools. Carol supported districts, schools, principals, leadership teams, and faculty in middle and high schools to create school communities where the minds, hearts, and spirit of every child and adolescent were nurtured.

She was a lead developer of our services including District Codes of Character, Conduct, and Support, Engaged Classrooms, Guided Discipline, and Advisory Plus. She authored or co-authored eight publications and several white papers for Engaging Schools, many aimed at helping teachers capture the qualities of joy, meaning, and imagination in their classrooms. The publications include Engaged Classrooms: The Art and Craft of Reaching and Teaching All Learners, Shifting Gears: Recalibrating Schoolwide Discipline and Student Support, Getting Classroom Management RIGHT, and The Advisory Guide.

For those Carol touched in personal and professional ways, you can hear them say, “What might Carol do in this situation?” She left a deep impression on those who experienced her, and she will continue to inspire and guide educators throughout the country for years to come through her writings. She will be deeply missed.
