$35.00

Segment 2, Academic Advisement, has three chapters introducing proven methods to use advisory to increase student achievement including using the highly effective Guided Work Period, engaging in Whole Group Academic Conferencing, and One-to-One Academic Conferencing to continually support students' academic success and progress in a systematic, ongoing way.

The DVD has reproducible PDFs with a scripted professional development guide and accompanying PowerPoint slides, videos of real advisories in action that align with the chapter, a reproducible PDF with an annotated guide of facilitation tips and strategies for advisory, sample advisory lesson plans, activities, handouts, and more.

  • Chapter 1 - Guided Work Period provides teachers and advisors with an opportunity to think about the importance of academic advising within advisory. Participants will explore their role in helping students become more self-directed around their academic data by helping them learn how to manage their time in a supervised Guided Work Period, by supporting them to reflect on their academic data through academic conferencing, and by providing structures to help them set authentic goals. Academic advisement is a fundamental tool for increasing academic achievement.
  • Chapter 2 - Whole Group Academic Conferencing explores how group academic conferencing is an effective way to influence all students to reflect on their academic performance. Participants will study the role of reflection and its relationship to student learning and achievement. A Whole Group Academic Conferencing model can be a way to maximize student academic support. This type of academic support takes very little teacher preparation time and allows students the opportunity to practice and develop critical skills, including self-monitoring and problem solving. In addition, an academic culture is established when students regularly engage in conversations around academics with a cohort of peers. Over time, this intentional culture can support students to feel more empowered and connected to school.
  • Chapter 3 - One-to-One Academic Conferencing provides teachers and advisors with an opportunity to explore how one-to-one Conferencing results in students developing a trusting relationship with their advisor. Personal conferencing is the cornerstone of an effective advisory program. One-to-One conferencing increases the advisor's ability to monitor and support advisees' emotional well-being, academic progress throughout high school, and postsecondary planning. Students learn critical skills to help them be more self-directed and self-monitoring, increasing their efficacy and confidence to advocate for their interests and needs.
